A Call to Protect and Uphold the Spirit of American Innovation
As leaders, we must uphold the values that make this nation a beacon of innovation to the rest of the world.

To My Fellow Business Leaders,
As the CEO of a technology startup with over 30 years of experience, I have witnessed firsthand the power of innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit. The drive to discover and deploy groundbreaking technologies has always been the key to growth and success and distinguishes leaders from followers. However, I am increasingly concerned that the very incentives that fuel this innovation are at risk if we do not act decisively together.
The tradition of American ingenuity has long been our nation's hallmark, guiding us from our agricultural roots to the industrial revolution, and now into the digital age. Each of these transformative periods has ushered in remarkable advancements, including improving our standard of living, enhancing our health and safety, and driving this nation’s prosperity. Central to each of these eras were great inventive minds, like Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, who dared to think differently and create something new.
Today, this spirit of innovation thrives in both startups and established companies. But as we navigate an increasingly global economy, it is vital to recognize the importance of protecting the intellectual property (IP) that underpins our progress. Patents are essential; they safeguard the ideas and inventions that drive technological advancement and ensure innovators are rewarded for their creativity and investment.
Yet, we face a challenge: instances of IP infringement are becoming routine, especially in regions with weaker legal protections. While there might be a temptation to cut costs by using reverse-engineered products, this approach undermines the foundations of innovation. Patent infringement not only rewards unethical practices, but it also discourages the true creators who are essential to future advancements.
While it is often said that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" and "one idea begets another," there is a crucial distinction between building upon an idea to create something new and infringing upon someone else's intellectual property. The former drives progress and innovation, while the latter hinders creativity, discourages ingenuity and is blatantly illegal.
As leaders, we must uphold the values that make this nation a beacon of innovation to the rest of the world. As fellow business leaders, I am asking you to advocate for strong IP protections, and make it clear to our elected officials, policymakers, fellow business leaders and trade partners that we stand united in fostering an environment where innovation is celebrated, rewarded and protected. While we welcome those who share in these passions and wish to contribute to this legacy of entrepreneurship and creativity, we will also vigorously defend ourselves against threats undermining these core principles.
Our brightest tomorrow hinges upon protecting the origins of innovation that have led us to where we are today. Standing together, we can ensure that American ingenuity continues to thrive, driving progress and prosperity for generations to come.
Sincerely,
Stephen Prince
